How this is calculated
Start with the room's square footage — length × width. A waste margin is added on top: 10% for a simple straight-lay pattern where cuts line up cleanly against the walls, 15% for diagonal layouts or solid hardwood where more offcuts are unusable, and 20% for herringbone or other pattern work where every piece is cut at an angle. The total is divided by how much one box covers, then rounded up — you can't buy 8.3 boxes, and it's always worth having the extra material on hand for future repairs.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
10–15% beyond the room's exact square footage is standard for most layouts. Complex patterns or rooms with lots of closets and doorway cuts push that closer to 20%.
Does this work for tile?
Yes — use the straight-lay setting for grid-pattern tile, and check the box for coverage per box (tile is often sold by the sq ft per box, same as laminate).
Should I order flooring for closets separately?
Add closet floor space to your total room length × width before entering it here — treating it as one continuous area keeps your box count accurate.
